There are lots of meetups about VR AR in SF or LA in California, but I am living in Greenville, South Carolina. I feel so lucky that there is a Virtual Reality meet up an hour away from where I live in Asheville, NC.
Tonight I will be going to try out the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift for the first time in my life. I heard about the painting program Google made called ’Tilt’ for Vive, and I am so interested in experiencing it. So excited!
During the meetup
During this meetup we are playing with the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. With the Vive, I am able to wear glasses so I can see the graphic quality is a lot better than my Samsung Gear. It’s because the graphics card inside the desktop is super powerful, versus the Gear which is powered with a mobile phone. Vive even has two controllers and with them I am able to pet a robot dog and play fetch with the dog in the “Lab” app.
Here is the demo of the “Lab” app.
Comparing the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift
The difference to me between the Vive and Rift is that the Vive has controllers you can hold similar to a Wii and the Rift has an Xbox controller or a gamepad.
I feel like VR is a lot more fun with a controller like Vive or even a glove or wristband than without it. It just feels natural that if you see a remote in Netflix VR, you can pick it up and change the channel.
Overall, it was a great meet up and was worth my 2 hours driving to Asheville, NC.
